The Target Corporation was founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota as an American retailing company known as Dayton Dry Goods. Target opened its first store near Roseville in 1962.

As of 2009, Target has stores all across the United States in every state except Vermont. This company is currently the second largest discount retailer in the US behind Walmart. As of 2009, Target is ranked number 28th on the Fortune 500 list.

Target products include automotive supplies, beauty products, bedding, clothing, compact discs, DVDs, electronics, hardware supplies, health products, kitchen supplies, jewelry, pet supplies, seasonal merchandise, shoes, sporting goods, and toys.

According to Wikipedia, the Target Corporation has agreed to reduce sales on all materials containing polyvinyl chloride (PVC) due to the health problems the substance can cause. Thus, Target is now selling greener alternative products that do not contain PVC. In total, Target sells over 700 organic and alternative products from brands such as Method Products, Archer Farms, and Burt's Bees.

In 2007, Target released a report that outlined plans on becoming more eco-friendly; these efforts included installing sand filtration systems, recycling programs, alternative energy (wind power), greenhouse gas emission reduction, fluorescent lighting, roof gardens, green roofs, and a Garment Hanger reuse program. Target prevented 434 million hangers which contained metals and plastics from entering landfills.
